A massive hailstorm pounded North Texas on March 24, from Denton all the way to Allen, Frisco, and parts of Dallas County. Some of you may have only experienced pea-size hail while others saw their lawns and pools covered in hail the size of golf balls in a matter of a few minutes.
Most damage was noticeably severe when the sun came up while others were less obvious, but regardless of how hard you were hit, now is the time to have your friendly, neighborhood roofing specialist, ANNSTAR, take a look.
Here are 6 telltale signs that you need a new roof now:
Missing Shingles
Hail and damaging winds like the storm we just experienced often make it painfully obvious you need a roof replacement without you even needing to break out the 24-foot ladder. If when doing a quick survey of the perimeter of your house, you see broken shingles on the lawn, in the pool, or strewn across the top of your gazebo, it’s time to call ANNSTAR. If you don’t replace missing shingles, the rest of the roof will quickly fail.
Shingle granules collecting near downspouts
It is not a good thing if you see large quantities of shingle granules collecting near downspouts or displaced across your driveway or backyard as that means your shingles – even if they appear to be intact after a storm – are no longer protected from the UV rays of the sun. Missing granules is a telltale sign that you need a new roof now.
Your roof is leaking
For the most part, you can tell immediately if your roof is leaking by visibly checking for water damage on walls and on the ceiling in all your bedrooms, bathrooms, attic, laundry room, garage, and living areas. If you see clear signs of water damage, or that your roof is sagging or has dark streaks, call us to inspect your roof immediately.
Dented or loose gutters
Gutters and downspouts are an equally important component of the roofing system, as they shed water away from your property and keep your roof in tip-top condition. If there is damage to your gutters (dents, sagging, holes, etc.), odds are your roof is in worse condition.
There’s daylight in your attic
If you get a chance, one of the first places you can also tell immediately that you need a new roof is in the attic. The attic is a cold (or hot), dark place, so if you go up there and notice light coming through the roof boards, then that means rain, snow, and everything else can get through, too.
Damage to chimney and roof flashing
Quality metal flashing, like what’s around the base of your chimney, is meant to withstand the elements. But some storms are just too big, and a busted chimney or flashing will lead to water damage, rot, and possible moss or algae growth.
